The Catholic Faith is joyful to its core and part of that joy is sheer fun. At St. Mary’s, holy water is liberally splashed, incense clouds the church, and our voices are loud in the praise of the Three-in-One. The stately procession which begins the Solemn High Mass draws less attention from the congregation than does the uneven line of stomping toddlers who join us at the altar rail for a blessing. Yet those same people who “belt out” the hymns on Sunday quietly offer the Eternal Sacrifice with the priest in the chapel on weekdays when the whisper of the Mass is almost inaudible.

The joy is not in the noise (or lack of it), in the incense, or in the water. We are joyful and revel in our worship because of the One Who Is Present.
